Touch screens to replace info depts soon at city rly station

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
VADODARA, Sept 16: You touch the screen, and all you want to know about available trains to your chosen destination, their timings and fares, appears on the screen. The Vadodara railway station will be the first in the country to introduce this emergent technology called the `multi-media interactive kiosk'.

Even the distance between stations and rules for break journeys etc would be available at a touch. Divisional Railway Manager K C Jena promised the system, to be installed at the inquiry counter, would be functional `very soon'.

Jena added that the staff had been working on the project for the past two months. ``At present we intend to begin with two screens and later increase the number,'' said Jena.

He added that three companies were -- namely Surya Palace, Aptech and Dairy Den -- would be sponsoring the project.

As many passengers were unaware of trains which could be taken for onward journeys, the interactive kiosk would contain information on this too, said Jena.

The screens would be placed inside a box and a guard would be present to protect it from destructive people. Jena said all these facilities were being introduced to add to passenger convenience. He added that apart from this, the division has also hired an interior decorator to do up an upper class waiting room.

The waiting room was being designed on the lines of those in airports, announced Jena. ``It would enable the passengers to wait in comfort,'' he said. He added that this waiting room was expected to be completed by December.
