Four jailed for dowry torture

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
VADODARA, Sept 16: District and Sessions Judge R M Parmar on Wednesday sentenced four members of a family to two years rigorous imprisonment for driving their daughter-in-law Reshma to suicide.

In his order, the judge stated that the charges of harassment against the in-laws have been proved beyond doubt, and hence they were liable to imprisonment. The judge also observed that Reshma's suicide was a fallout of incessant torture by the in-laws.

Penshanpura resident Karsanbhai Harijan married his daughter, Reshma, to Indervardhan couple of years ago. According to the case diary, though in the beginning the in-laws were nice to the girl, a few months later they began demanding money from her.

According to the advocate who appeared on behalf of the complainants, the girls parents attempted to fulfil the demands initially, but since the demands started growing, the girl was under constant pressure.

About six months ago, the four accused demanded Rs 60,000 from Karsanbhai for ensuring Indervardhan's recruitment in the railways. Since the parents expressed their inability to pay the amount, the in-laws further harassed her. Not being able to bear the trauma, the girl committed suicide by immolating herself.

After hearing the contentions of the girls parents and the accused, the District and Sessions judge ordered the imprisonment of Indervardhan, his mother Laxmiben, his sister and her husband.
