The North-East was put on high alert following the killing of a BJP candidate in Assam and shoot-at-sight orders issued in Bihar on the eve of fourth phase of polling for 74 Lok Sabha seats spread across nine states on Saturday.

Economic sanctions imposed by the Clinton administration following the May 1998 nuclear tests in South Asia "appear to have had a relatively minimal overall impact on India and a minimal but somewhat more pronounced adverse impact on Pakistan," a US government report has said.
