MADURAI: City police last night arrested two persons who attempted to travel in the Pandiyan Express with bombs and arms.

Police, who questioned the two and checked their baggage, found country bombs and weapons in them. Investigations revealed that the arms were meant to murder the son of the late TMC councillor Singathevan who was killed in a gang attack a few years ago.

Two crushed in building collapse

MADURAI: Two building workers were crushed to death and five others suffered serious injuries in a building collapse at Palayankottai near Tirunelveli last evening, police said today.

Police said eight building workers were engaged in the construction of a building for the past three months. The building collapsed after it was battered by strong winds, police said, adding that the injured had been hospitalised.

Bandh hits normal life in Assam

GUWAHATI: Normal life has been hit in Assam following a 10-hour bandh called by the AsomJatiyatabdi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) from 6 am today. The bandh was called in protest against `secret killings' in the State and to press for the dismissal of the AGP-led Government in the State.

10 cops rewarded for nabbing gangs

NEW DELHI: Ten police personnel, including one ACP, were today given cash rewards and commendation certificates by Delhi Police Commissioner A R Sharma for nabbing members of four gangs who looted train passengers after drugging them. Their exemplary work resulted in the arrest of members of Babar, Khalid , Sheikh Azad and Farooq gangs, who were operating in trains originating or passing through UP, Delhi, Bihar and West Bengal.
