Cops in a bind over hauling `brahmchari hypnotist'

Arvind Chhabra
CHANDIGARH, Sept 24: Yet to recover from the shock of the `fake ASP', a strange case concerning hypnotism has the city police facing a fresh dilemma. According to a complaint lodged by a senior Haryana government official, a "possessed brahmchari", who allegedly hypnotises his female followers to exploit them, is doing the rounds in the city. He is reported to be staying at a policeman's house in the Police Lines, Sector 26.

The complainant has alleged that his 22-year-old daughter has been under his spell for about an year now. However, till this evening no case was registered, as the police were left wondering whether the brahmchari can be hauled under any offence.

This afternoon, the complainant, accompanied by his wife, approached SSP (Headquarters) Ajay Kashyap, who is also the officiating IGP. When contacted, Kashyap said he had asked SDPO (East) Vijay Pal Singh to investigate the matter and ascertain the facts.

The complainant stated that more than a year ago, his wife and daughter had gone to the "prabhu" who was giving a pravachan in Manimajra. While his wife came out in the middle of the discourse, his daughter stayed back. "She later told us that the man had stared her in the eyes and she was hypnotised. Then she did as he wanted her to do," the complainant added. He said his daughter insists on being taken to the ``prabhu'' and says she would leave them if her wish is not fulfilled.

She is currently undergoing psychiatric treatment in Panchkula and has dropped her MA exams. He added that while the matter was brought to the family's notice a few months ago, they had hesitated to inform the police. "However, as she continues to be strongly under his spell and many more women and girls are being exploited, we thought we must inform the police," the complainant said.

He added that the "prabhu", who is in his early 30s and reportedly belongs to Vrindavan, had been operating for over a year-and-a-half here. "He takes shelter in houses where there are young women, hypnotises them and then exploits them," he alleged. He added that during this period he had exploited several women. Many of his clients are police families and he is presently reported to be staying in the house of an ASI in the Police Lines.

Vijay Pal and Sector 26 SHO P.M. Walia were, however, shuffling the pages of Indian Penal Code to find out under what offence the crime was covered. They felt that there is no provision to book anyone for hypnotising anybody as no court of law accepts the theory. Police sources added that cops have been positioned around the house where he is putting up to ensure that the "hypnotist" does not flee.
