Dahiya stars in Airlines win

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
S.A.S. NAGAR, Sept 24: With skipper Vijay Dahiya showing the way, Indian Airlines beat Punjab Cricket Association Colts XI by four wickets to enter the semifinal of the sixth J P Atray Memorial cricket tournament here at the PCA Stadium today.

Chasing the PCA Colts XI's moderate total of 206, Indian Airlines capitalised on a flying start and coasted to victory with six of their allotted 50 overs still remaining. Dahiya scored 80 enterprising runs off 97 balls, studded with six fours to be declared the man of the match.

Earlier, PCA Colts fumbled when looking poised for a big total. They were 185 for 6 in 41 overs but the innings folded up soon as the later order batsmen showed their inexperience. Middle-order batsman Sanjay Kumar held the PCA Colts' innings together with a strokefilled 60 (74b; 5x4) while the opener, Ankur Kakkar scored 40 (44b; 6x4). Indian Airlines were missing their star players, some of whom are on national duty, but seamers Abdul Qayoom and RP Singh made up well for them. RP Singh bagged three for 32 while Onkar Singh and Subhash Chaudhary picked up two wickets each.

Indian Airlines openers Dahiya and J Arun Kumar (39) set the pace early on in the run chase and with the advent of left-hander Yuvraj Singh (38), the PCA Colts' attack was rendered toothless. Arun hit eight fours in his knock while Yuvraj, who got a reprieve off Sanjay Dhull's bowling, had four boundaries and a six in his effort.

Towards the end, Airlines did lose a couple of wickets to the left-arm spinner Ankur Kakkar but that was only a slight hitch.
Scores: PCA Colts: 206 in 45.5 overs (Sanjay Kumar 60, Ankur Kakkar 40, Tejinder Singh 26, Harminder Kaku 20, Rakesh Saini 17; R P Singh 3-32, Onkar SIngh 2-43, Subhash Chaudhary 2-65) lost to Indian Airlines: 207 for six in 44 overs (Vijay Dahiya 80, J Arun Kumar 39, Yuvraj Singh 38, Shafiq Khan 22; Ankur Kakkar 4-27).
