Top teams for Gurmit hockey

CHANDIGARH, Sept 24: Top 25 teams of the country are taking part in the 29th edition of the All-India Gurmit Memorial Hockey Tournament which starts at the Sector 42 Astroturf Stadium tomorrow with a match between Central Industrial Security Force and Shivalik XI at 3 p.m.

Releasing the draw, Chandigarh Hockey Association president Chander Sekkhar, Inspector General of Police, Punjab Police, said here today that defending champions Punjab and Sind Bank, runners-up Punjab Police, Baba Farid Gold Cup winners Border Security Force and star-packed Air India have been given bye straight into the quarter-finals.

In the upper half of the draw are: Punjab and Sind Bank, Food Corporation of India, Central Industrial Security Force, Shivalik XI, Air India Academy, Rail Coach Factory, Air India, Punjab and Sind Bank Academy, Northern Railway, Indo-Tibetan Boder Police, Electrical and Mechanical Engineers and Central Reserve Police Force.

Border Security Force, Sikh Centre, Chandigarh Hockey Association, Friends Club, Central Railways, AOC Centre, Ropar Hawks, Wonderland, Customs, Indian Air Force, Punjab State Electricity Board, Western Railway and Punjab Police.

CHA secretary S N Vohra said besides the glittering trophies, special prizes would also be given to the best goalkeeper, the best fullback, the half and the best forward.

Rovers champions
Rock Rovers won the Chandigarh Senior State Hockey Championship by defeating Central Industrial Security Force by 7-5 in the final via tie-breaker at the Sector 42 Hockey Stadium. The teams were tied three-all in the regulation period.

Grewal, Navdeep and Saurabh were the goal scoers for the winners in the regulation period. Pradeep, Parvesh and Arfaz scored one goal each for CISF.

Chandigarh Olympic Association joint secretary Ravinder Talwar distributed the prizes.

IAF probables
Indian Air Force have selected 26 probables for coaching camp in preparation for participation in the Inter-Service hockey championship to be held here in December. The probables were selected during the Air Force hockey championship which concluded yesterday.
The probables: G Ajith, Satheesh, RK Singh, Raj Prakash, Satbir Singh, Sohan Singh, S Singh, KM Prakash, PS Kohl, Pradeep Singh, Ramesh Kumar, CS Narendra, M Singh, Davesh Rawal, Hardeep Singh, L Sharma, Balbir Singh, Baldev Singh, J Topono, Kujur, Neeraj Sahu, ZP Saini, JS Thapa, Mukesh, Manish and MS Seth.
