PANCHKULA, Sept 25: Sounds of laughter filled the Gymkhana Club in Sector 6 here today, when the Cultural Society of Rohtak presented the play Gadhe ki Barat. In this Hindi adaptation of a Marathi play, the director has tried to unravel the hypocrisy and base intent of the ruling elite. Their blase assertions of bridging the gap between the rich and the poor are sharply focussed and treated with biting satire that is only possible in a folk idiom bereft of the padding given by the well-heeled. The play is a donkey's eyeview of the world in which differences of status and income are increasing day by day.
Repeatedly referred to as Kallu Mian Ki Nautanki by the chorus, there were traces of the Marathi tamasha. Watching a simple play that dealt with the immediate surroundings, everyday happenings, highlighted problems faced by average citizens and in a language and technique which went straight to the heart of the people, was a real delight.
The play started almost two hours behind schedule. The director of the play, V.D. Trikha, informed that this was the 98th show of the play and the diamond jubilee show would be held at the IAS Academy at Mussoorie on the October 14.
