Teenager's shocking find -- Electricity from bananas

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
BANGALORE, SEPT 29: Ripe bananas may at some time become the source for generating low-level electricity. An intriguing phenomenon discovered by a teenager, Gedupadi Prashanth Kumar (15). He demonstrated the technique to a spell-bound audience, mainly school students, at the J N Tata Auditorium, Indian Institute of Science, on Tuesday.

Not only did he establish this marvel, he also succeeded in dispelling doubts in the minds of young and old alike, about his finding.

Prashanth Kumar was in the city, along with another young achiever, Madhurima Benaka Reddy, to present their discoveries in Bangalore. This is part of the efforts by `Looking Around', a students' group of interdisciplinary interactions, at the Indian Institute of Science, to identify budding scientists in the country.

Madhurima, also 15 years, spoke on `bio-pesticides through chemical technology, anti-feeder and insecticidal properties of Annona Squamosa (custard apple) seeds'.

Kumar's explanation of the functioning of `banana batteries'(his invention in simple terms) set at rest any speculation that would have otherwise arisen. It was an example of how simple techniques - generation of electricity through fruit waste (ripe bananas) when connected to electrodes -- can create wonders.
