Goods train derails, throws traffic from Mumbai out of gear

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PUNE, SEPT 29: Rail traffic on the Mumbai-Pune section of the Central Railway was thrown out of gear for nearly eight hours after a box container wagon derailed near Begdewadi station on Wednesday morning.

Nearly eight metres of the track on the Down line to Pune were heavily damaged after the wagon jumped off the rails at around 7.30 am. The derailment occurred when the goods train was changing tracks and moving towards the marshalling yard from the main line.

The wagon was carrying a heavy container and was third from the guard's cabin. The last two container wagons and the guard's cabin, however, remained on the tracks. Almost the entire train had crossed tracks near the Shelarwadi cabin when the derailment occurred. Due to the impact of the derailment, the track received a sudden jerk, and one of the rails of the main line was snapped.
