EPRLF calls for UN mediation
EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
COLOMBO, SEPT 29: Voicing the sentiments of various sections of Sri Lankan Tamils, the Eelam People's Revolutionary Liberation Front (EPRLF) has blasted foreign minister Lakshman Kadirgamar's call to the United Nations to keep away from the island's conflict."The 51 year history of post-independent Sri Lanka repeatedly proves that the polity of this country, Sinhala as well as Tamil, cannot and are incapable of finding and implementing a reasonable and just political solution to the national question," said EPRLF secretary-general Suresh Premachandran said in a statement on Wednesday. Premachandran said the sufferings of Tamils in Sri Lanka would end only through an involvement or intervention by a third party, "preferably the UN". He pointed out that after years of harassment and humiliation, besides the physical destruction of the long years of war, the Tamil people were convinced that their aspirations could not be met without "external persuasion". "The only option left to the Tamil people now is toseek the help and involvement of the international community to persuade all intransigent parties to show more flexibility and to arrive at a just political solution," he said.
