In this seminar, 13 papers on various aspects of Punjabi language, literature and culture were read and deliberations were held. During discussions, the need to upgrade the standard of teaching of Punjabi was stressed. The use of modern technology in teaching of all the subjects was also emphasised.

University Vice-Chancellor Jasbir Singh Ahluwalia, while thanking the scholars and guests, declared that a sangeet sammelan on the lines of the Punjabi sahit sammelan, for the revival of the Patiala sangeet gharana, would soon be organised by the University. He said works of Punjabi literature written by Pakistani scholars in the Shahmukhi script and those written by the Indian scholars in Gurmukhi, would be transcribed with the help of computers so as to make them accessible to the common man.

Dr S.S. Johl, a renowned economist and former vice-chancellor of the University, in his valedictory remarks, said development in any society leads to the precipitation of a multitude of problems. This, he said, is a good sign and must not be feared, for these problems ultimately lead to progress.

Johl also condemned the adoption of the western culture at the cost of our own and asked the writers in our country to come up with original works that are a reflection of our culture. He said now is the time when literary works on the pattern of Tulsi Das, Shah Mohammad and Waris Shah need to be churned out. KU Vice-Chancellor M.L. Ranga, in his address, said the adoption of the study and teaching of Punjabi at every level, including the villages, will be a milestone in the development of the Punjabi language and culture.

Earlier in the day, Prof Raghbir Singh and Dhanwant Kaur presented their papers on a Modern Punjabi Novel and Modern Punjabi Story, respectively. Dr Dalip Kaur Tiwana presided over the session.

Vice-Chancellor Jasbir Singh Ahluwalia presented a set of books and a shawl to S.S. Johl and M.L. Ranga on the occasion.
