Late results render re-evaluation futile

Anupreet Sandhu
CHANDIGARH, Oct 3: Punjab University students are questioning the relevance of re-evaluation of examinations as the re-evaluation results are declared well after the supplementary examinations conclude.

This happens every year, students point out. A student may be placed under compartment (re-appear) in April and consequently is required to appear in a supplementary examination in September. This student may seek re-evaluation also, and may come out with passing marks in which case he need not appear for the supplementary. But if the re-evaluation results are not declared before the supplementary comes along? He's in for the exam, even if it means waste of money, time and labour.

This year, out of all examinations held in April, re-evaluation results of B Com-III and BA-I (English compartment) have been declared so far, whereas the supplementary examinations for the undergraduate courses are already over. Post-graduation examinations are on.

Controller of Examinations Sodhi Ram said: "The declaration of revaluation results before the supplementary examinations definitely helps both the students and the university. Last year, for the first time in the history of revaluation, most of the revaluation results for the undergraduate classes were out before the supplementary exams."

He said: "Since, the examinations were conducted 35 days behind schedule this year, the revaluation procedure was also put behind schedule."

Officials add that examiners are sometimes slow to re-evaluate the copy which further delays the re-evaluation procedure. They rue that there is no stringent policy by which the varsity can ensure that the examiners submit their work on time. "There is no accountability," said Rajesh Gill, Reader in the Sociology Department. "Teachers don't consider this a part of their job. Some modus operandi should be devised where examinations and re-evaluations are top priority with the teachers."

University Registrar Paramjit Singh admitted that it will help students and the varsity if re-evaluation results are declared before supplementary exams. However, he said he doubted if any stringent policy can be effectively framed to ensure that examiners evaluate answer-sheets and submit these in time. "There are so many factors involved; re-evaluation is a very complicated procedure... In fact, in some subjects, it is difficult to even locate an examiner to re-evaluate the answer-sheets. At times the examiners do not send the evaluated sheets on time, putting behind the re-evaluation procedure by a number of days."
