65 babies ill; given ink dose as oral vaccine

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
BURDWAN, OCT 13: Altogether 65 babies were indisposed after they were mistakenly administered ink instead of the pulse polio oral vaccine at Kandra villgae in West Bengal's Burdwan district today.

District Additional Superintendent of Police Niraj Kumar Singh told mediapersons that the babies displayed signs of giddiness and started perspiring profusely after they were administered the ink kept for identifying those already given the vaccine at the village's anganwadi centre on the opening day of the countrywide intensified pulse polio immunisation programme.

The babies were admitted to the Katwa sub-divisional hospital and later released after their condition improved.

District Chief medical officer (health) Dr Satyabrataboot and other senior officials rushed to the spot.

The incident led to tension in the village, but police intervened and brought the situation under control.
