One-ways planned to end chaos

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PUNE, Oct 13: The traffic wing of Pune police is contemplating conversion of the roads linking the Pune railway station with Alankar cinema hall and Maldhakka Chowk on Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Road into one-ways.

The move, which aims at easing the traffic flow in the vicinity of Pune railway station, comes close on the heels of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and the Central Railway's decision to widen the congested chowk bang opposite the main gate of Pune railway station.

Traffic police officials said only the vehicles heading toward Pune railway station from Maldhakka Chowk will be allowed on the Sanjay Gandhi Road which goes to Pune railway station from Maldhakka Chowk via railway maldhakka.

As of now, the road is a one way with entry available only to vehicles proceeding toward the railway maldhakka from Alankar cinema chowk and Pune railway station.

Pune Municipal Transport (PMT) and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Transport (PCMT) buses as well as the goods carrying vehicles coming out of the railway maldhakka are, however, likely to be allowed to proceed toward Maldhakka Chowk on the road.

The Prince Aga Khan Road which links Pune railway station with Alankar cinema chowk is also likely to be converted into a one-way with entry available to vehicles heading toward Alankar cinema hall, traffic police officials said. As of now, the vehicles heading in both the directions are allowed to ply on the road.

The Jay Prakash Narayan Road, which links Bolhai Chowk in front of district collector's office with the main entrance of Pune railway station, has already been converted into a one way with entry available to vehicles heading toward Pune railway station.

The lane linking Chandramani Chowk near Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar garden with Sassoon Hospital as well as the road providing a passage between Prince Aga Khan Road and Jay Prakash Narayan Road via Hotel Shrikrishna have already been converted into one-ways with entry available to vehicles proceeding toward Jay Prakash Narayan Road.

Earlier in July this year, the PMC had started working on a plan to widen the congested chowk opposite the main gate of Pune railway station following the Central Railway's proposal of handing over the possession of its 350 sq m land to the civic administration.

After acquiring the land, the civic administration cleared the encroachments in the chowk and felled two huge trees. It had also undertaken the work of widening the Sanjay Gandhi Road. The civic body plans to increase the width of the busy road to 27 meters from the present width of 15 meters.

A plan is also afoot to provide a new entrance to Pune railway station near the Railway Mail Service office and to construct a foot path along the compound wall of Pune railway station.

The civic administration also proposes to relocate a hoarding at the railway station's main entrance and to break dividers on the Prince Aga Khan Chowk to provide a direct access to the railway station for the vehicles coming from Alankar cinema side.
