MUMBAI, OCT 17: To prevent tragedies like the Khanna and Ghaisal railway accidents, the Konkan Railway has conceptualised and designed an innovative device to prevent collision between trains. These are not preventable with current available technologies and there is no protection system at present for drivers who are directly exposed to the risk of committing an error for no fault of theirs.According to the new concept, each locomotive will be fitted with the anti-collision device (ACD) which is activated when any two trains are within two kms of each other. The devices carry their identification such as train number, whether Up or Dn, whether running on the right or wrong track and the moment they are within a distance of two kms, exchange their information with each other through digitally encoded packets.
Collisions can occur after `fouling' of tracks following train derailment, operational diversion of trains on wrong line and parting of trains in mid-section. They can also occur at stations, atmanned and unmanned gates or when the driver or guard is missing or inactive. The device is capable of detecting, warning and initiating action in all these situations. Unveiling the ACD on the occasion of Konkan Railway's ninth foundation day on Friday, officials said the first laboratory prototype of the device was ready within 40 days of launching the project. Live demonstration of the new device on moving trains will be held in the presence of high-power safety committees by December 31, they added. Konkan Railway has set up a `Shramshakti Smarak', a memorial for labourers who died during the construction of the railway project. The Konkan Railway has also adopted a novel technique -- boulder netting -- to avoid untoward incidents due to land slips or boulder falls.
