Services, Railway boxers share honours

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
SHIMLA, OCT 17: Asian Games gold medallist NG Dingko Singh outpointed Zotham Mawai of Mizoram for a facile win to claim the bantamweight gold as Services and Railways shared the honours winning four gold medals each at the National Boxing Championship here this evening.

Overwhelming favourite Dingko Singh scored a 12-1 win on points as Mawai seemed no match for the services pugilist. The Mizo boxer, however, showed courage in extending Dingko to four rounds.

Besides Dingko, Ramanand, Monendra Rana and Gurcharan Singh won gold medals for Services as they tied with the Railwaymen for team honours on the concluding day of the 46th edition of the senior nationals.

Flyweight A Srinivas Rao, Bhushan Saini, Lalit Prasad and Jitendra Kumar earned gold medals for the Railways as they and Services both won seven medals -- four gold, two silver and one bronze medal -- each.

Services had to face the ignonimity of sharing the team title with Railways as its superheavy boxer N Navalan conceded his final tie toPolice's Harpal Singh. Navalan was indisposed and and was declared medically unfit to contest.

Asian Games bronze medallist Gurcharan Singh made a shortwork of CISF's Deepak Yadav in the heavyweight category and won with an ease as his rival retired in the second round.

In featherweight category, ace Services pugilist Ramanand defeated V Bhaskaran (Rlys) on 16-11 points decision. The Railway boxer put up a brave fight and also landed powerful punches on his experienced opponent.

Monendra Rana brought the fourth gold for Services as he effortlessly defeated Gurmeet Singh of All India Police in light-weight category with a huge 19-4 point margin. Rana displayed his class right from the start and dominated in the ring.
