MUMBAI, OCT 25: The Mumbai Railway Police Commissionerate has clamped down on bhajan mandalis on trains, asking them to maintain decorum and avoid creating trouble on trains. The step was taken after violence reportedly broke out between two groups on a local train near Mumbra about 20 days ago.According to police reports, a group of people were singing bhajans when some people who entered the compartment at Mumbra objected to the noise. When the bhajans continued, the other group retaliated by singing qawwalis. The argument led to fisticuffs and five people were injured in the violence. They were admitted later to a hospital at Mumbra.
Railway police commissioner S M Mushrif told Express Newsline that bhajan mandalis' activities had been put to an end completely on the Western Railway, while similar steps were being taken on the Central Railway. ``We are not taking any action against them since it is a sensitive issue. But we are persuading them to stop singing on trainsbecause it disturbs a lot of people,'' Mushrif said, adding that the move had drawn extreme reactions from people. ``While several people have called me up congratulating me on the step taken, there are others who have protested, saying an activity that has been going on for years cannot be ended in this manner.''
