The world over, direct selling is mostly popular only amongst women. It offers them a great opportunity to be self-employed and independent. The figures for India are not very different from those of America, as depicted in the chart.

As per a repor brought out by the Indian Direct Selling Association (IDSA), in 1998, people in direct selling collectively earned approximately Rs 100 crore in commissions and bonuses. The industry grew by 62 per cent in 1998 in terms of turnover. More importantly, the direct selling industry grew by about 300 per cent in terms of the number of sales persons. Companies like Lotus Learning, LBP, Tupperware, Amway, Avon, DKFL and Oriflame are members of the IDSA.
