CHANDIGARH, Nov 1: The students of Physics Department, Punjab University, boycotted classes and staged a dharna outside the department today. They were demanding rustication of the accused in October 29 incident, Amarjot.Amarjot is a student of M.Sc-I (Physics) and secretary of the Chandigarh unit of Akhil Bharatiya Vidhayarthi Parishad (ABVP).
The demonstration follows the October 29 incident in which Rajiv Thakur, Amarjot's classmate and Departmental Representative of the Panjab University Students' Union (PUSU) was allegedly thrashed by Amarjot and some 25 persons.
The police had registered a case of rioting and assault against Amarjot and other "unidentified" persons.
PUSU chairman Munish Anand, has demanded Amarjot's rustication from the department to help maintain discipline and peace on the campus.
However, Amarjot when contacted, said he was falsely implicated in the case and that the matter was unnecessarily being politicised.
He said: "When I reached the department on the day of the incident, I saw a group of some 20 persons beating up Rajiv Thakur in the ground next to the Physics Department. Then I saw Rajiv running towards the department. I knew that if he ran into the ground on the other side, the attackers would kill him. I dragged Rajiv inside the department and asked him to go to the chairperson's' room. But the attackers pulled him out again. Meanwhile, I called up the police and later went with one of the lab attendants to get an ambulance for Rajiv. Ironically, I learnt the next morning that a case had been registered against me."
The campus unit of ABVP, led by president Surat Negi today submitted a memorandum to the Dean Student Welfare demanding disciplinary action against Rajiv.
Chairperson of the department, I.M. Govil, meanwhile has formulated a committee to look into the incident and submit the report within two or three days.
"Necessary action will be taken against the accused," he said.
Meanwhile, the Panjab University Campus Students' Council submitted a memorandum to the chairperson of the department. They have demanded an unbiased enquiry into the episode.
