Two Indians among 74 held for drug trafficking

MANILA, NOV 3: Two Indians were among 74 foreigners arrested in the Philippines on the charges of drug trafficking in first 10 months of this year, a Philippino senator said. O the 74 foreigners arrested, 38 face possible death sentence, once they are convicted in the court, said Senator Loren Legarda, citizen's drugwatch foundation executive council member, yesterday.Thirty-seven of those facing death verdicts are from China while at least one is from Taiwan, Legarda said, adding 50 of the 74 arrested from January to October were from China and taiwan. Three nationals each from Germany, Australia and Liberia were also captured, along with two nationals each from Japan, South Korea, Malaysia and Nigeria. Likewise one national each from United States, France, Switzerland, Bulgaria and Egypt, was netted. Since the Philippines reimposed capital punishment in 1994, Legarda said lower courts have sentenced to death 13 foreigners - seven Taiwanese, five Chinese and one Japanese - after they were convictedof large-scale drug trafficking.
