Phones dead in Alkapuri
About 50 telephones went out of order in the Alkapuri area on Wednesday due to a cable fault. According to telecom officials the fault was detected when some subscribers called up the telecom inquiry informing them about the fault. Officials said that the fault was rectified in about an hour's time.

Orissa cyclone relief
The Vadodara Municipal Corporation's general body meet (VMC) was adjourned on Wednesday after paying respects to those who lost their lives in the Orissa cyclone. A two-minute silence was observed. The Western Railway Employees Union have also collected cash and clothes from railway employees to be donated to the affected families. Meanwhile, the city chapter of the All India Democratic Students' Organisation (AIDSO) also decided to raise funds for the cyclone-affected. City unit president Bharati Parmar said that members would go to residential societies to gather financial assistance.

Self-employment information
Information on self-employment would be jointly disseminated by the Employment Office and the District Industries under the Pt Deen Dayal Self-employment Scheme for unemployed youths at the Premanand Sanskar Kendra, Wadi, on Thursday. State Labour minister Bhupendra Lakhawala would be the chief guest on the occasion, an official release said.

Committee appointed
The annual general meet of the Shree Narayana Cultural Mission was held at Sardar Bhuvan recently and elected the managing committee for the year 1999-2000. G P Senan was elected President and N Yashodharan Vice-president.

Senior citizens' celebrations
Swami Premdas Medical Complex has organised several programmes to celebrate the International year for senior citizens. A health check up and treatment centre for senior citizens was organised at the hospital premises on Tuesday. Among others, Mayor Umakant Joshi was also present.

Yoga education for children
Children of the Gujarat Refinery English Medium School were educated about Yoga exercises by Rajesh Barot at a special session on Monday, a school press note said. Barot also highlighted the significance of yoga in curing various chronic diseases.

AIFUCTO treasurer elected
Nikhil Desai of the M S University has been elected Treasurer of the All India Federation of University and College Teachers Organisation (AIFUCTO). He is the only representative from Gujarat. The elections were held at Bhopal recently.
