Larri-galla rally turns violent

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
VADODARA, Nov 3: A massive rally taken out by larri-galla operators on Wednesday in protest against a Vadodara Municipal Corporation decision to seize goods from operators in non-hawking zones turned violent when it reached near City Point opposite the Gandhi Nagargruha.

Rallyists, angered by some of their brethren operating near City Point and Mangal Bazar despite the bandh call given by the local association, attacked kiosks which were open.

According to eyewitnesses, they looted some clothes from kiosks near City Point and then marched towards the kiosks in Mangal Bazar. However, the kiosk-owners retaliated and attacked the rallyists with sticks and stones. Two rallyists were said to have been assaulted seriously, eyewitnesses said.

Anti-rally larri-galla operators chased the rallyists upto the Nyaya Mandir. However, the matter was sorted out with the intervention of a police team led by Assistant Commissioner of Police B P Sarvaiya.

When contacted, inspector Rathod of the City police station said that a kiosk operator, Paresh Eintwala from City Point, had lodged a complaint stating that readymade garments worth Rs 1,000 were looted by over a dozen people when the rally was passing from the road opposite Gandhinagar Gruh around 4 p.m. He could not identify the looters, according to Rathod. No arrest has been made in this connection.

In a related development, the Youth Congress today submitted a memorandum to the Mayor challenging the VMC's authority to seize loaded carts. Reacting to this, Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Administration) H S Patel said the Supreme Court had issued a judgement demarcating hawking and non-hawking zones, and anyone operating from a non-hawking zone could be held in contempt of court.
