Jamnalal Bajaj awards to be given today

NOVEMBER 4: Professor Sir Joseph Rotblat, Narayan Desai, Dr Ajoy Kumar Basu and Saraswathi Gora have been chosen for this year's Jamnalal Bajaj Awards, to be presented at the Y B Chavan auditorium on November 5.

Professor Rotblat, recipient of the International Award for Promoting Gandhian Values Outside India, is a scientist and has made significant contributions to Nuclear Physics, Medical Physics and Radiation Biology. He was one of the scientists who worked on a counter bomb in UK and Los Alamos when it was rumoured that Nazi Germany was creating the atom bomb. When it became clear that Germany was not working on the bomb he resigned and entered the field of medicine.

For Narayan Desai, founder of Sampoorna Kranti Vidyalaya, peace through non-violence has been the main mission. He was actively involved in the Quit India and Bhoodan movements. He has collected 3,000 acres of arable land and distributed it among villagers and has undertaken several social and economic programmes for the weaker sectionsof society.

Dr Ajoy Kumar Basu's biggest achievement has been to set up the Society for Rural Industrialisation . He focuses on technology planning, modulation and transfer of technology for villagers, especially in the tribal belt of South Bihar, West Bengal, MP and Orissa.

Saraswathi Gora, a freedom fighter is a crusader against untouchability and the caste system. She has founded the Atheist Centre which counsels and provides shelter to needy women. She has led struggles for abolition of zamindari and jogini system and encouraged women to develop a rational outlook.
