PU to start agro-based courses from Nov 24

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHANDIGARH, Nov 4: Punjab University Botany Department's Centre for Vocational Studies is introducing training courses in agro-related skills. Initially, the courses will be of three months duration, but the intention is to upgrade them to full-fledged three-year vocational courses.

In addition, the department will concentrate on placement after graduation or alternatively, help graduates establish their units immediately after they complete their degree courses. According to principal coordinator Dr S.C. Kaushal: "We will be inviting recruiters from important industrial houses to the campus to interview our students."

The first of these courses, teaching button and oyster mushroom cultivation, gets underway from November 24. There is no fee for the course and persons who have completed Plus Two are eligible for admission in the batch of 30 students. The last date for receiving the applications has been fixed for November 18.

Kaushal said: "In addition to imparting skills, the Department will also assist students in setting up their business units. We will teach them how to set up their own business units, procure loans and make use of government schemes. The department will follow their progress for a year after they complete the course. It is for the first time that the department is doing such a follow-up."
