Punjab to open donation-based schools, colleges
EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
ROOPNAGAR, Nov 4: The Punjab government has accepted in principle the scheme to open donation-based educational institutions. Under this scheme, the permission to open middle, high and senior secondary schools and colleges would be granted on a priority basis to those voluntary organisations which construct buildings at the cost of Rs 8, 12, 18 and 40 lakh, respectively. This was stated by Minister of State for Education Swarna Ram after inaugurating the district-level science exhibition at the Government Girls Senior Secondary School here last evening. He said the government would prefer to open more educational institutions for girls under this scheme. Besides, the equipment and staff for these educational institutions would also be provided by the state government. The state Education Minister disclosed that a survey of unsafe school buildings in the state had been conducted and the government would collect the revenue for their repairs by imposing a cess of Rs 1 per bottle on the sale of liquor in the state. During the last financial year, Rs 8 crore revenue had been collected by imposing such cess in the state. Copyright © 1999 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
