Vajpayee stresses on `coalition dharma' at BJP executive mee

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, NOV 4: Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee on Thursday tried to soothe frayed tempers of party leaders from Karnataka and Bihar over the Janata Dal (United)'s alleged role in the Lok Sabha elections, by emphasising his ``coalition dharma'' at the party's national executive.

Delivering his valedictory address, Vajpayee said that BJP, being the largest party in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), had the responsibility of making the coalition experiment a success.

``Coalition governments have not always been successful but there has been a qualitative change in the situation between 1977 and 1999,'' Vajpayee said. He said that people had given a clear mandate for a coalition. Even the Congress, despite its pretensions, had to ally with any number of allies though these alliances did not help.

It was both a testing time and an opportunity for the coalition government to successfully carry out its promises to the people, he said adding ``there is a need to work hard to bring about regionalbalance in development. Our view of development is speedy welfare along with employment and social justice,'' he said.

The Prime Minister outlined the twin tasks before the party: Stengthening the NDA and expanding BJP's base. He also promised to ensure that past mistakes regarding the WTO agreement were not repeated and India's interests were fully protected.

The Prime Minister said Andhra Pradesh's example was worth studying where there was a qualitative change with people accepting hard decisions taken by the government and not falling to the temptation of free power offered by Congress. The political resolution adopted at the executive outlined the need for consensus on major national issues and asked opposition parties to respond positively and play a constructive role.

Expressing disappointment over the party's dismal performance in Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka, the resolution said there was need for introspection on the reasons for the setback.

The resolution asked for the earlyintroduction of the Women's Reservation Bill. It also called for early adoption of the Lokpal Bill and Statehood Bills for Uttaranchal, Vananchal, Chattisgarh and Delhi.
