To keep state on track, Rlys run without signals

BHAVNA VIJ
NEW DELHI, NOV 10: Trains in cyclone-affected Orissa are running blindly without any signalling and telecommunication facilities. With no signals in the area working most signal posts have been uprooted by high-velocity winds the Railways have been forced to operate trains without any control communication, using only VHF sets.

``Even the VHF sets are not working effectively since their batteries keep getting discharged. But we are trying to make arrangements for battery charging. We have to keep running the trains to carry relief material and evacuate the stranded passengers,'' said a senior Railway Board official.

Railways have been carrying thousands of tonnes of relief material and even running military specials to carry the armed forces personnel to the affected areas.

The trains are running slowly with the drivers stopping at each station and proceeding only after getting written clearance from the station masters.``The drivers have been told to proceed with extreme caution. We are trying to be as safe as possible in the circumstances,'' the official said.

Railway operations had been completely disrupted following the cyclone. Non-availability of power only compounded the problem. ``But the railway personnel worked round-the-clock to resume some operations in the area after 36 hours. The signals are also being restored gradually,'' another official explained.
