NAGPUR, NOV 10: A Madras-Delhi Airbus-320 of the Indian Airlines carrying 104 passengers on board, including Managing Editor of Express Publications (Madurai) Limited Manoj Kumar Sonthalia and the BJP spokesperson Venkaiah Naidu, made an unscheduled landing at the Sonegaon Airport on Tuesday after the fire alarm of the aircraft started ringing. The aircraft was at a great height when the fire alarm started beeping. As a result, the captain of the aircraft decided to land it at Sonegaon Airport, instead of continuing further journey. However, after landing at the airport, Captain Atmaram, who was piloting the aircraft, and other technicians found that the alarm was an hoax and there were no signs of fire.
All the 104 passengers resumed their journey for Delhi on a special aircraft requisitioned from Delhi, not before being stranded in the city for more than five hours. The Airbus-320, which was grounded due to the snag, later flew for Delhi after it was certified `OK' by the engineers who arrived here in a special aircraft.
The air traffic control office informed the ground staff at the airport to remain prepared for an unscheduled landing of the IC-440 Madras-Delhi aircraft. Local authorities conducted a thorough check of the aircraft.
Station Manager, Indian Airlines, Nirbhik Narang later communicated the matter to higher authorities at Delhi and requested them to send a special aircraft immediately to fly the stranded passengers. An Airbus-320 arrived here at 2.30 pm and later returned to Delhi with the passengers.
