Dighe elected president of Rahata press association
Ahmednagar:
Prof. Shankarrao Dighe has been elected president of Rahata Taluka Patrakar Sangh. Other office-bearers are Vishnupant Pansare, vice-president, Sitaram Chande, general secretary, Satish Vaijapurkar, treasurer, and Balasaheb Raut, joint secretary.

Aid to cyclone-affected people
Ahmednagar:
Employees of the Ayurved Mahavidyalaya from Sangamner have donated Rs. 5,001 for the people affected by the cyclone in Orissa. A meeting of the employees held recently has paid homage to those who lost their lives in the natural calamity.

Hotel employee murdered
Ahmednagar:
An employee of a hotel in Rahuri was found murdered recently. The deceased, Ashok Tapase, a native of Karhe in Sangamner taluka, was stoned to death by unidentified person. The motive behind the murder is not known.

Namdeo award for Mahanor
Ahmednagar:
Veteran Marathi poet N D Mahanor has been selected for the Sant Namdeo award, instituted by the Jamkhed-based Bhai Phutane Pratishthan.The literary award which consists of cash prize of Rs. 5,000, will be presented at a function to be held at Jamkhed on November 14. The function will be attended by Magsaysay award winner social worker Dr. Rajanikant Arole, Prof.Nagnath Kottapalle, Prof. Rangnath Pathare among others. The award distribution ceremony will be followed by a poets' meet.

Gayatri elected to ZP from Audh
Satara: Gayatri Devi, widow of late Bhagratrao Pant Pratinidhi, Audh in Satara district, was elected to Zilla Parishad from Audh constituency in the by-election yesterday. She contested for the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and defeated BJP-Shiv-Sena alliance candidate Chandrakant Pawar by 1987 votes. Gayatri is the heir to Audh principally after the death of her husband, Bhagwatrao in an accident in Pune some months ago. She won the ZP seat in the by-election and is the first Zilla Parishad member from NCP in Satara.

Maharishi Karve remembered
Bharat Ratna Maharishi Karve was remembered on his 38th anniversary at a meeting held at the Sadhu Vaswani Mission in Pune on Wednesday.

Speaking on the occasion, Dada J P Vaswani recounted the life and achievements of Dr Karve and said, ``Maharishi Karve was one of those few truly great ones who rejoiced in poverty. His was a religion of service. He never hankered after prominence, publicity and power.

He dedicated himself to the cause of women's emancipation. He realised that women would be able to find their true place in society if they were educated. Therefore he started a women's university, now known as the SNDT university''.

Award for Prof Shinde
Prof. Ram Shinde, a trustee of Janseva Foundation and retired principal, will be awarded the educational service award by The Indian Freelance Journalist Welfare Association at a function to be held in Mumbai on November 14.

Seminar on Karma
A national seminar on the philosohpy of Karma, will be held from November 14-16, organised by the Shree Adinath Society Jain Temple Trust, Pune. The seminar, which will be conducted in Sanskrit, will be attended by scholars of Sanskrit and philosophy from Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Gujarat and Pune.

It will be held at the Adinath Society Jain Temple, from 9.30 am to 12.30 pm and 2.00 pm to 5.00 pm.
