Kalyan goes kicking & screaming

SHARAD GUPTA
NEW DELHI, NOV 10: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Kalyan Singh would resign before the BJP legislature party meeting at 11 am tomorrow and will himself propose the name of septuagenarian Ram Prakash Gupta, who is currently deputy chairman of the state planning commission and virtually in political hibernation.

The change in Kalyan's attitude came after speaking to Home Minister Lal Krishan Advani and party president Kushabhau Thakre this morning. The outgoing Chief Minister had adopted threatening postures on Tuesday blaming Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee for the debacle in UP.

Blaming Vajpayee with plotting his removal, Kalyan had said he was awaiting Prime Minister's call directing him to resign. That the two did not exchange a word since Tuesday, reflected on the deteriorating relationship between the duo.

The reason for Kalyan's mellowing down today was being attributed to the good equation he enjoys with Gupta, besides of course, the sobering effect today's telephonic conversation with Advaniand Thakre had on him, senior BJP leaders claim.

Thakre and BJP general secretary in-charge of UP affairs, K N Govindacharya, today left for Lucknow to be in time to have an informal chat with BJP legislators before tomorrow's crucial legislature party meeting which both of them would attend.

BJP leaders meanwhile, allayed fears of trouble from Kalyan in the process of change of guard. ``He has been taken into confidence,'' party general secretary M Venkaiah Naidu said. The BJP leaders will talk to their allies after formally electing Gupta as legislature party leader tomorrow before conveying the decision to the Governor, he said. BJP leaders can breathe easily at least for the time being as he does not intend either to rebel and form a separate outfit. He has already turned down the offer to join the Vajpayee Cabinet or take up an assignment in the Central party, sources close to Kalyan claimed.
