Doubts over entryof Rajiv's children into political arena

HARISH GUPTA
NEW DELHI, NOV 10: The Congress establishment at 10, Janpath is in a state of chaos over the induction of Rahul Gandhi and his younger sister Priyanka into active politics.

Though the siblings have shown keen interest in assisting their mother, Congress president Sonia Gandhi, and actively participated in the Congress campaign for the recent Lok Sabha polls, indecision on the part of the Congress chief has prolonged the party's re-organisation.

Both the Gandhi siblings have not made any public statement about joining politics. But Sonia said in a recent television interview that Priyanka ``takes more interest'' in politics. Even Priyanka's husband Robert Vadra was quoted in Lucknow as saying that Priyanka was cut out to play a political role.

Therefore, Sonia's November 4 statement at Amethi to a news agency that ``Priyanka could be given a responsibility in the party set up if she so desired'' was received with jubilation in the All India Congress Committee (AICC).

Most of the office-bearers, including some general secretaries, also took credit for persuading Sonia to induct Priyanka into the party to stem the rot that has set in after the Congress' crushing defeat at the hustings. They pleaded with Sonia day in and day out to bring Priyanka in to save the organisation.

When Rahul Gandhi quietly left on a trip to Singapore and London early this month skipping Diwali celebrations with the family, it was interpreted in party circles as an informal announcement of Priyanka's entry into politics.

But they were in for a shock on Tuesday when the party's official spokesman Ajit Jogi dismissed as ``baseless'' reports that Priyanka was joining active politics and would be given some responsibility in the organisation. ``There is also no truth in reports that organisational responsibility is being assigned to any of the children of Congress president,'' he said.
