Three youths meet watery grave in the deadly Bhushi dam

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PUNE, Nov 15: Bhushi dam, the popular tourist spot in Lonavla, has again proved fatal as three youths, hailing from Mumbai, drowned in it last evening.

Divers from nearby INS Shivaji and the local police rushed to the spot immediately after the accident was reported, but could fish out the bodies of only two of them. The third one was fished out 12 hours later on Monday morning.

According to the police, Kuljit Singh Arora (19), Manmohan Singh Mansingh (18) and Jogesh Anand (19), all residents of Sion, Mumbai arrived at the tourist spot on Sunday afternoon along with a group. The trio, police said, decided to go in for a swim in the evening and disappeared soon after.

Their friends rushed to the local police who got in touch with divers at the nearby Naval training institute, INS Shivaji. After a brief search, the divers managed to fish out the bodies of Kuljit and Manmohan. Although they continued with their search late into the night they could not locate the body of Jogesh.

His body was recovered around 10 am when the divers resumed their search today. According to the post-mortem report, all three died by drowning, police said.

Bushi dam had received a lot of focus in the past years due to similar accidents being reported every year. The police had initiated stringent measures two years back to curb such accidents. All vehicles coming into the area would be checked for liquor and swimming had been banned in the waters. The police had also launched a campaign to inform revellers about the dangers of dam.

The Lonavla police have registered a case of accidental death and are investigating.
