Tax collection up

In September this year, the states' share of net tax revenue shot up by a stupendous 54 per cent. As compared to August, this was over and above the 43 per cent rise in net tax collections recorded in that month. With good tax collections in August and September, the total net tax revenue for the first half of 1999-2000 entered a positive growth phase and there was a 12 per cent increase in net tax revenue as compared to the same period last year.

Non-tax revenue also continued to grow at a healthy pace and during the April-September period, the growth was 26 per cent as compared to 16 per cent recorded during the same period in the last financial year. The growth in non-tax revenue was also substantially higher than the 12 per cent growth projected in the Union Budget.
