Canada to raise immigrant opportunities

JOSEPH MALIAKAN
NEW DELHI, NOV 21: The Federal Government of Canada, while speeding up the process of immigration, is considering a move to double the targeted figure of 2.5 lakh immigrants per year to five lakhs, thereby generating more immigration opportunities for Indians.

India's largest company in immigration and settlement in Canada, Resource Interface, in collaboration with one of the world's largest immigration consultant company O'Brien King Consultants of Canada, has decided to exploit the increased immigration opportunities in Canada.

Addressing a press conference S.N. Kachroo, the company's spokesperson said that Canada's requirement of manpower was immense. For example, for computer programmers in Canada, there are currently 27,000 job vacancies available. Despite such a bright scenario, the target of 2.5 lakhs immigrants per year for the last two years has been missed by more than 50,000 numbers annually. However, recently the influx of Indian immigrants to Canada, from India and other nations , hasincreased. Although no firm statistics are available, the estimates reveal that more than 37,000 professionals from Delhi alone migrated to Canada last year, it was pointed out.

Fran O'Brien, ex-immigration officer currently with King Consultants, said that Canada was very different from the Gulf that the country did not wish to attract temporary job seekers. `` We are looking for persons who wish to settle on a permanent basis, raise their children, and hopefully their grandchildren in Canada.''

``Canada is one of few developed countries that actively attempt to attract skilled and experienced immigrants on a permanent basis. The reason for this is very simple. We have a very small population (less than 30 million people) with the largest geographic land mass of any country in the world. We need to increase our population if we are to compete on a world scale with other great industrial nations,'' O'Brien added.
