21 Algerians die in violence upsurge

ALGIERS, NOV 21: Muslim rebels disguised as government soldiers killed 20 people at a bogus roadblock in Algeria, local dailies reported today.The rebels stopped a bus and a taxi near the Chiffa area, 50 km south of Algiers, on Saturday. They then killed the victims including women and children slashing the throats of most of the them and machine-gunning others as they tried to escape, Le Jeune newspaper said. Seventeen people were wounded, the newspaper added.

Government security forces gave a different toll on Saturday, saying 15 people were killed and eight wounded.

Also, one schoolboy was killed and three schoolchildren wounded when a bus taking them to school ran over a bomb near Tamerjit village in Bejaia, some 200 km east of Algiers, La Tribune newspaper reported today.

The newspaper said the bomb was planted by Muslim rebels.
