CHANDIGARH, NOV 21: Would you believe that the total consumption of fish in the city is 25-35 quintal a day during the winters and 15-20 quintal a day during the summer months? This is a fact according to data available with the Fisheries Department. In recent times the demand of fish has witnessed an upward trend and in spite of the high price tag the local market is flooded with fish products which have good sales.Meanwhile, as far as fishing in the city is concerned, it was banned 3-4 years back. The sources in the Fisheries Department say that they take special measures for breeding the fish from March to July. The fish being bred include Rahu Katla and Grass Crab which is released into the Sukhna Lake and helps in eating the grass. This type is specially brought from Calcutta. An official of the department said that Chandigarh has been declared wet land which prohibits fishing.
The JD's Super Market in Sector 35 has a wide range of fish products. Besides, the Sanghara and the sea fish, the canned stuff includes sardines (170 g for Rs 38), crab meat (180 g for Rs 102), light meat tuna (200 g for Rs 55), sardines in tomato (340 g for Rs 48), sardines in brine and oil (450 g for Rs 46), mackerels in tomato (450 g for Rs 72). The store also has frozen stuff like crab cutlets (6 pieces for Rs 125), prawns (12 pieces for Rs 125), fish fillets (6 pieces for Rs 110), fish fingers (10 pieces for Rs 100).
There is a range of sea food pickles in the market which include fish pickle (200 g for Rs 60), fish spread (200 g for Rs 67), prawn pickle (200 g for Rs 50) and mackerel pickle (200 g for Rs 50). Meanwhile, the Peshawari Super Market in Sector 18 has the premium range, besides other items. The premium range includes tuna in oil, light meat tuna, sardines in tomato sauce and sardines in vegetable oil which are almost the double the price of the ordinary range available. The premium range includes branded products like the Heinz, Family, Kimball, Geisha companies. The owner of the shop, Hitesh Gawri, says that demand for these products is picking up.
There is a fish market in Sector 45 which has 22 shops and the shopkeepers boast of selling fresh fish. Parveen says,"This market has been here for the last 12 years and we sell varieties like Rohu China Golden, Singhi and Mirgal for Rs 35-40 per kg. The costliest one is Mangoor which is available for Rs 70 per kg. Meanwhile the general population still goes in for the fresh stuff but the tinned food is also gaining popularity and is expected to rise in the times to come.
