Nov 25: After a nine-day-long inquiry into the sensational murder of 60-year-old Nirmala Uttamchandani, who was brutally strangulated to death on November 16, the Azad Maidan police have arrested the killer duo. Interestingly, the main accused turned out to be the person who had been helping the police in their investigations all along.Uttamchandani was found dead in her 2,000 sq feet apartment on the fifth floor of Western Court building, Marine Drive, by her daughter Sonali Ramchandani. Police have arrested Raju Brijmohan Maurya, who had been working as a plumber in the building for the last four years, for the murder. The cops said they did not suspect him but his involvement was revealed by a witness to the murder.
Soon after the murder, police had started making inquiries with the watchman, plumber, delivery boys and other persons staying in the neighbourhood of the building.
Among all those questioned by police, Maurya turned out to be the most helpful and cooperative. According to senior policeinspector of Azad Maidan police station Nagnath Askolkar, Maurya was also detained by the crime branch sleuths for a couple of days and then let off. ``Had it not been for a witness from the neighbouring wing of the building, we would have been unable to zero in on Maurya,''senior police inspector Nagnath Askolkar said.
