NEW DELHI, NOV 25: Rashtriya Lok Dal president Ajit Singh yesterday demanded that Uttar Pradesh be split into smaller states as it had become politically ungovernable. Speaking to reporters, he said the BJP was ``making Bihar'' out of UP and that the change of Chief Minister had done nothing for the people of the State. He said a commission should be set up to study the issue of reorganising large states into administratively and politically governable units. The commission should study aspects like population, economic viability, cultural and ethnic affiliations, etc. The states which he felt should be reorganised are the ones for which bifurcation proposals already exist. These are Madhya Pradesh and Bihar, apart from UP.
Singh seemed to suggest that the UP case needed to be examined properly as splitting it into two, Uttarakhand and the rest of UP, would not be enough to resolve the state's difficulties. He described the Uttarakhand proposal as being ``too little too late''.
