November 25: Mayur Vasant shocked second seed Sanzaruz Zaman 6-1, 6-3 in the JS Pereira Memorial tennis quarter-finals at the Bandra Gymkhana today.Vasant will meet Benjamin Xavier in the semis. Xavier accounted for sixth seed Mohammed Yasser Arafat (AP) 6-4, 6-4.
Vasant trailed 1-2, 0-40 in the second, the only time Zaman had a chance to break serve and get a hold of the match. But the 39-year-old Vasant saved three break points took the game.
Playing this tournament in the 29th year, Vasant, who suffered stomach cramps late in the opening set, started moving up in order to kill points early. Both held serve till 3-3 before Vasant broke Zaman in the seventh and ninth games to carve a place in the semi-fianal.
