Rs 25 lakh gift to stray dog project from Maneka

NOVEMBER 26: Maneka Gandhi, Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, will donate Rs 25 lakh towards the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) sterilisation and immunisation programme of stray dogs. According to municipal commissioner K Nalinakshan, she made the assurance in a telephonic conversation that the amount would be provided to build infrastructural facilities at the proposed site where the BMC plans to set up a dog pound for the programme.The funds will be made available as soon as the corporation earmarks the plots of land, which would take about a month, added Nalinakshan. Every year, the BMC undertakes the sterilisation and immunisation of around 5,000 dogs. The canine population in Mumbai is estimated at being over two lakh.
