PUNE, NOV 28: As a tribute to the police personnel who laid their lives while on duty, a police memorial, the first in the State, is to be constructed in Pune near the district headquarters of the rural police.The memorial will be constructed in the new campus of the Centre for police research, an autonomous body recognised by the State Government, which was established in the city in 1992. The Centre has acquired eight acres of land at Chavannagar on the Pashan Road, where the police memorial will be built.
Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and Deputy Chief Minister Chaggan Bhujbal will lay the foundation stone for the proposed new building of the centre as well as the memorial on Monday. State home ministers Krupashankar Sinh and Manikrao Thackeray, besides state director general of police (DGP) Arvind Inamdar will be present for the function. Additional DGP, State CID, M N Singh, who is also the executive director of the centre for police research, said the estimated cost of the new building as well as the police memorial is around Rs 5 crore. All police personnel, including officers, have donated one day's salary for the work by which already Rs two crore has been collected, Singh said. Voluntary organisations and citizens can make their contributions for the memorial. Donations to the centre for police research are exempted up to 50 per cent from income tax, he said.
Renowned architect Hafeez Contractor has made the design of the centre building and memorial.
Singh said that the names of all police personnel in the State who laid down their lives since Independence as well as their units will be inscribed on the plaques that are to be placed in a garden near the memorial. ``The memorial will be one of the landmarks in the city as people from all over the State can come here and see it,'' Singh said. The new complex and the building is to be completed within three years, he said. After the memorial is built, the police commemoration parade, organised every year on October 21, will be held at the new campus of the Centre for police research.
Stressing the importance of research work regarding various aspects of policing, Singh said that till now the centre has brought out books `Formation of criminal gangs in cities with special reference to Mumbai, CID manual, and Crime in Maharashtra 1998. The chief minister will be releasing the book on crime in the State at the function tomorrow.
