Funds shortage a hurdle for women

ENS ECONOMIC BUREAU
MUMBAI, NOV 29: Access to capital is one of the main obstacles to the development of female entrepreneurship. Although there is no discrimination in granting loans to women, they encounter more difficulty in raising financial resources, the findings published by a round table organised by the Indo-Italian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Maharashtra Centre for Entrepreneurship said.

"They have less financial competence; they are less inclined to indebtedness; they are less inclined to use personal property as a guarantee for a loan," the report said listing some of the reasons which worked against entrepreneurship in women.

They also had less time to dedicate to work because of the family responsibilities. It said women were present in government sectors where there was a higher degree of protection and where there could compete at par for a professional recognition.
