Bedade, Sugwekar lift cloud over Sun-Grace

Mumbai, Nov 29: Tata Sports Club and Sun-Grace (Mafatlal) did not have to wait for the third day to enter the final of the Times Shield `A' Division cricket tournament. Indian Oil accepted defeat at lunch on the second day itself in their match against Tatas at the Elf-Vengsarkar Academy, while Air-India conceded theirs at Police Gymkhana against SunGrace at draw of stumps.

Chasing Indian Oil's 142, Tatas reached 215 for six by lunch. At Police Gymkhana, last year's runners up SunGrace piled up 323 for eight before A-I threw in the towel.

Resuming at 88 for 4, Tatas flourished courtesy fifth wicket pair of captain Lalchand Rajput and left-hander Nishit Shetty (44), who added 94. Rajput remained unbeaten on 85 (151b, 14x4, 2x6).

Air-India, resuming at 252 for six, were bowled out for 275. Medium pacer Omkar Salvi was the wrecker-in-chief with seven for 62 in 23.1 overs.

Sun-Grace were tottering at 53 for 4, before the fifth wicket pair of Shantanu Sugvekar (96: 169b, 6x4, 4x6) and southpaw Atul Bedade(126: 102b, 12x4, 8x6) performed the repair job. Both batted freely to add 189 runs.

Brief scores: Indian Oil 142 lost to Tata's 215-6 (Lalchand Rajput 85 not out, Nishit Shetty 44, Iqbal Siddque 3-61, Manish Patel 3-50); Air-India 275 (Sanjay Manjrekar 106, Tariq-ur-Rehman 51, Nandan Phadnis 61; Omkar Salvi 7-62, Rajesh Pawar 3-87) lost to Sun-Grace 323-8 (Shantanu Sugvekar 96, Atul Bedade 126; Narendra Hirwani 3-98, Tariq-ur-Rehman 3-24).

Indian Gym fight back
Indian Gymkhana overcame an 18-point half-time deficit and pipped hosts Ghatkopar YMCA A 71-68 to enter the quarter-final of the 12th Bombay YMCA Open basketball tournament sponsored by Kanara Engineering.

Don Bosco impress
Don Bosco A, Matunga, drubbed Sundatta 87-2 in the boys U-16 section of the MSSA-Colgate Inter-school basketball tournament at Azad Maidan today.

Pinto power fuels Anne's
Jack Pinto scored four in St Anne's 8-0 win over Holy Family School in the boys' under-16 league of the MSSA-Colgate Inter-school hockeytournament at St Andrew's, Bandra. Prashant Fernandes (2), Reuben Bent and Lawrence Soares were the other scorers.

Fr Agnel score
Father Agnel Gymkhana (Navi Mumbai) scored a 2-0 win over Ecstacy Sports Club in the opening match of the second Western India Football Association's women's tournament at the Cooperage today. Carol D'Souza and Laura Fernandes were the goal-scorers.

Quennie Mendes scored a brace while Remedy Mamata Salian scored the other goal for Remedy Lourdes Combine who beat Ace Ventures 3-0 in another match.
