According to the court, there were enough circumstantial evidence to convict the accused. As per the case, the body of Bikhabhai Rameshbbhai was found in Mandvi village in Dabhoi taluka in May 1998. Bikhabhai's father Rameshbhai had earlier lodged a report with the Dabhoi police, stating that his son who had gone to graze cattle in a nearby field had not returned.

During investigation, police interrogated Bikhabhai's friends who had accompanied him for grazing and learnt that they had seen Bikhabhai accompany his uncle Rajubhai Vagri, who was carrying an axe. Police later begun a search for Vagri, who was believed to be absconding.

The police, however, arrested him in Dabhoi and, during interrogation, he confessed to his involvement in the crime. Vagri disclosed that he had killed his nephew to loot the latter's silver ornaments.
