World Bengali meeting from December 26
UNITED NEWS OF INDIA

NEW DELHI, DEC 5: Bengali intellectuals, writers, historians, technocrats and industrialists from all over the world will assemble here to participate in a three-day `Visva Bangla Sammelan' commencing on December 26, 2000.The meeting will be organised under the auspices of Nikhil Bharatbanga Sahitya Sammelan.

The major issues that would be discussed during the meet includes review of the Bengali language, culture and arts during this century. It would also find out ways of promoting this language among the new generation Bengall in and outside West Bengal.

The executive committee members, who recently met here to prepare a final draft agenda for the meet, failed to reach a consensus on the question of promoting the Bengali language by using Devnagari script, as a majority of the members felt that it would lead to `Hindinisation' of the Bengali language. However, the proponents of this theory were of the view that it would bring the non-Hindi speaking people closer to the Bengali language.

The memberswere in favour of setting up more Bengali teaching institutions for Bengalis as well as others.

Nearly 1,200 delegates from various parts of the world are expected to take part at the 73rd session of NBBSS which would be coinciding with this meet.
