Lethal
Injection is more humane
India and the USA are two countries in the world which
have progresssive forms of government, but which still carry the controversial
provision of capital punishment in their penal codes. In the recent
years, most of the states in America which have this ultimate punishment
in their penal codes have changed their method of execution to lethal
injection. It has proved to be a simple and humane procedure compared
to hanging, electrecution, gas chamber, and shooting.
As observed by the prisons in the states of Texas and Virginia, which
carry out most of the executions in the U.S.A, lethal injection is a
two-minute procedure. The inmate is strapped to a gurney and an injection
needle is inserted into the vein of his or her forearrm by the prison
doctor. The needle is attached to a tube which runs through an opaque
screen. This tube brings the injection solutions from three large size
syringes, kept behind the screen. An anonymous prison official presses
the syringes in sequence, in order to carry out the punishment. The
first syringe contains a general anesthetic which makes the inmate lose
consciousness instantly. After a few seconds a muscle relaxant flows
from the second syringe. The lungs collapse in no time and a faint noise
can be heard as air exits through the nose. Now potasssium chloride,
a routine laboratory chemical flows from the last syringe to stop the
heart. The doctor comes forward and pronounces the inmate dead after
checking the heart beat with the stethescope.
In India, it is especially easy to make the necessary amendments to
the penal code (I.P.C) to change the method of execution from hanging
to lethal injection, since that power rests with the central government.
Let me hope that the concerned law makers and public in India would
do so at an early date, if the capital punishment is prefered to remain
in the Indian Penal Code.
Sincerely,
Hari Prasad, Washington.
