
Smoking in public places banned in Goa from today

PANAJI, DEC 31: Prohibition on smoking and spitting in public places in Goa would come in force from New Years Day and any violation of the Prohibition on Smoking and Spitting Act, 1991 would attract a penalty of Rs 1000 or imprisonment.A high-power panel constituted under the chairmanship of Ashok Nath, Chief Secretary, reviewed the measure proposed at a meeting here yesterday and finalised modalities to gear up its machinery to take up the implementation of the Act with all seriousness, an official release said today.
The areas brought under the purview of the Act included cinema and conference halls, hospitals, health and educational institutions, libraries, places of worship, airports except designated areas, and buses and waiting rooms at the railway stations. The areas would be immediately notified, it said.
