Review of the Enron Deal

Dear Sir,

It is disturbing to learn that the new Government in Maharashtra is once again going to review the Enron deal. Of course, it is a sovereign right of all Governments to review such agreements, however, it hardly adds to our credibility as a credit worthy nation, if such reviews are undertaken flippantly with every change in Government. In the Enron deal in particular, the constant politically inspired wranglings have the unmistakable odor of politicians fighting for pieces of the pie, with the Company in question helplessly standing witness to all this extortion.

In the long run, the Indian people will be the ultimate sufferers if such conduct is not checked. Which foreign investor would want to invest his hard earned money in our blessed country, if all he can look forward to is a rapacious mob of politicians, arms stretched and begging for alms ?? A time will come when the only investors we can attract will be those who are in a position to sustain a monopoly position in connivance with local politicians, therebye stripping our country's resources to the bone.

I hope that the Central Goverment cautions the Maharshtra Government on its latest moves, and that all deals of this nature are in future vetted by an independent committee of national experts, to prevent future controversies.

Regards,

C.S.Venkat, USA
