Tawde ton spurs Podar against Ruparel

MUMBAI, FEBRUARY 15: Premjit Tawde and number eight batsman Padmanabh Kulkarni pulled RA Podar out of troubled waters at the Elf-Vengsarkar Academy ground, Oval on Tuesday. While Tawde compiled a fine 105 (16x4), southpaw Kulkarni cracked 58 (6x4, 2x6) as Podar ended day one of the four-day Inter-Collegiate final on a satisfactory note. Opponents Ruparel, who had held the upper-hand in the initial stages of the day were struggling at 40-2 when stumps were drawn for the day.

Electing to bat first, Podar found medium-pacer Rohan Ganpule (4-42) too hot to handle and were tottering at 124-6 before Tawde and Kuklarni got into the rescue act.

Paigankar powers IDBI
Parag Paigankar's fine all-round performance which included an unbeaten century (104 not out) and four wickets guided IDBI cruise into the finals of the Indian Airlines CricketTournament at the Kalina ground on Tuesday. IDBI upstaged Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust by 70 runs.

Brief Scores: IDBI 245-7 in 45 overs (Parag Paigankar) bt JNPT 175 (Nandu Mhatre 68, Ashutosh Marathe 2-11).

Singarvalen supreme
N SINGARVELAN of Royal College claimed the Mumbai Division Selection Chess title with a round to spare on Monday evening. In the eighth and penultimate round at the Zandu Pharmaceutical Works Canteen premises, Singarvelan downed Milind Nevgi to garner eight points and maintain his all-win record in the event.

Singarvelan of Royal College is a clear full point ahead of his nearest rivals. Nitin Nawar of Mumbai Police and top-seeded VKN Solanki, who won their eight round matches share the second spot with seven points each.

Mikhail shines
Seeds had a harrowing day in the boys under-10 category of the 4th Wodehouse Gymkhana Junior State Ranking Tennis Tournament that got under way at the gymkhana on Tuesday.

Mikhail Saldanha stole the honours by claiming second seed Nehal Gaokar 8-6 while Chinmay Agarkar, Samir Paranjpe and Dhruv Kapur sent the fourth (K Prathmesh), fifth (Elton Lewis) and sixth seeds (Jai Shah) packing.

Arnav Jain excelled in the u-14 category downing sixth seed Richendra Nanda 9-4.

Pereira's triple strike
Craig Pereira's triple strike powered St Stanislaus A to a 8-0 victory over Don Bosco, Borivli at the former's ground on Tuesday. Joel Saldanha (2), Floyd Dharma, Bradley Tellis and Jason Rebello (one each) too joined the goal-fest to lead the team into the semi-finals of the boys under-12 MSSA-Colgate Inter-School Hockey Tournament for the Walter D'Souza Trophy.

Stanislaus B, however, faced no such luxury as they toiled for a 1-0 victory over St Anne's, Orlem. St Andrew's A and Don Bosco A, Matunga completedthe semi-final line-up.

RBI hold SBI
Reserve Bank of India held State Bank of India 1-1 in the Bombay Hockey Association first division match at Mahindra Stadium. Trever Netto (22nd minute) and Trevor Fernandes struck for RBI and SBI respectively.

Other results: Division III: Best 3 (Prashant Khanvilkar 2, Anthony D'Silva) bt MPF 0.

Semi-finalists spotted
Jai Bharat SC and Star of Canara SC entered the semi-finals of the fifth Ramnath Payyade Memorial Karnataka Football League played at KSA Centre. Jai Bharat beat Karnataka Amateurs while Star of Canara defeated Kanara Brothers SC by identical 2-1 scores.
